Bridging Communities in Challenging Times
CEO Corner - Connected Conversations

Connecting, collaborating, and learning from each other has become paramount in our rapidly evolving global environment. As the owner of Ad Astra Inc. and host of the podcast "Connected Conversation," I am dedicated to promoting dialogue among leaders from diverse communities. My objective is to illuminate challenges and develop impactful solutions, rooted in the belief that global issues require collective efforts beyond geographical and socio-political confines.
Three years ago, on a sunny day in Washington, D.C., I was walking through the vibrant streets of Dupont Circle and absorbed in an episode of The Economist. The episode covered the ongoing Russian invasion of Ukraine, an urgent and complex matter. This episode prompted deep reflection on how geopolitical upheavals affect individual lives and collective psyches.
That day ended with an appointment on U Street, where a seemingly ordinary moment transformed into an extraordinary dialogue. I overheard two young women speaking Russian about the war. I approached them to inquire about their well-being and the invasion's impact on their families. In this serendipitous moment, I met Margaryta Suvorova. Our conversation entered sensitive territory when the question of my origins arose—Ukraine? I clarified my Russian heritage, which was met with a moment's pause. We talked, building an open dialogue that continues today, including insightful exchanges on my podcast.
This episode explores themes of identity, community, and Ukraine's struggle amidst the war's ramifications, offering our listeners a compelling narrative of resilience and activism. Margaryta Suvorova's journey began in Cherkasy, Ukraine, and took a significant turn when she moved to the United States in 2008. As a nurse, she not only pursued her career but also became an advocate for her homeland as the war escalated. Throughout the episode, she emphasizes the importance of the community as a vital source of empowerment and support, particularly in challenging times. Her experiences highlight how community ties provide stability and strength, allowing individuals to navigate difficult circumstances personally and collectively.
A focal point of Margaryta's narrative is language's role as a conduit of culture and identity. As the war with Russia continues to impact perceptions of Ukrainian identity, she passionately speaks about the significance of the Ukrainian language. She illustrates how Russian propaganda has historically attempted to undermine Ukrainian culture, emphasizing that language is a cornerstone of identity and resistance against oppressive narratives. Margaryta's fluency in Ukrainian, Russian, and English embodies identity's complexities in a post-colonial context while reaffirming her commitment to preserving and promoting her native language.
As an activist, Margaryta dedicates her time and resources to supporting Ukraine in various ways, including fundraising, medical supplies, and aid for orphans and those affected by the war. Her activism reflects a powerful personal motivation derived from her identity and her desire to protect her homeland. The episode underscores the importance of continued support for Ukraine as global attention fluctuates, highlighting the country’s ongoing needs. Margaryta’s story serves as a reminder of the necessity for collective action and solidarity among Ukrainians and those who stand against the war across borders.
Margaryta shares her personal experiences of displacement and the challenges faced due to the war. From growing up in Cherkasy to her studies in Bucha, she paints a vivid picture of her life before and during the war. Her narrative's emotional weight reflects the trauma many Ukrainians endure, illustrating how the war has irrevocably changed lives and communities.
Margaryta strongly advocates for mental health and well-being in activism. She discusses the importance of psychological support for children affected by the war, acknowledging that while physical aid is crucial, emotional healing is equally vital for long-term recovery and resilience. She shares her strategies for maintaining emotional well-being, such as practicing meditation and building community connections, as well as a reminder of the necessity for self-care amidst activism.
In a world that often feels disconnected, we aimed for engagement and solidarity that transcends national borders in this episode. Margaryta urges us, particularly those from other countries, to engage with political representatives to advocate for ongoing support for Ukraine. Her message is clear: action is required from Ukrainians and everyone who believes in freedom and human rights.
We wanted to highlight the community's significance, resilience, and personal responsibility in effecting change. Margaryta’s relentless activism is not merely a response to the current war; it embodies her love for her country and her belief in the power of collective action. Her story inspires listeners to connect with their communities, engage with each other, and advocate for those facing oppression.
As a Russian American, I feel deeply responsible for sustaining this vital dialogue. It is crucial to engage openly with the Ukrainian community, acknowledge their pain and suffering, and explore ways to offer support. This ethos of empathy and solidarity—one community reaching out to another in challenging times—captures the podcast's mission and our broader professional endeavors.
Indeed, engaging in conversations, especially on contentious topics, builds understanding and breaks down the figurative—and sometimes literal—walls that divide us. This process resembles diplomacy on a micro level, where dialogue promotes peace and understanding, acting as a powerful remedy for division and conflict.
Hosting "Connected Conversation" has reinforced my belief in communication's transformative power. I am continuously inspired by the leaders I engage with, whose resilience in adversity serves as a beacon of hope. We cultivate a fertile ground for innovative solutions through shared learning and exchanging ideas. By sharing stories and strategies, we learn from one another and plant the seeds of collective action for a better future.
In conclusion, the "Connected Conversations" episode featuring Margaryta Suvorova powerfully illustrates how personal narratives can illuminate broader social issues. Her experiences shed light on the vital roles of community, identity, and activism in the fight for justice and support for Ukraine. This episode serves as a rallying cry for individuals to empathize with others' struggles and actively participate in creating a world where freedom and dignity are afforded to all.
