What it is

What is on-site interpreting?

On-site interpreting, also called in-person interpreting, places a qualified interpreter physically in the room with the people who need to understand each other. It is the format of choice for legal, government, and medical settings where physical presence is required, where documents are handled, or where the stakes make remote interpreting inappropriate.

Ad Astra can perform interpretation services on site or virtually. We have successfully provided on-site interpreting from Montreal, Longueuil, Toronto, and Vancouver to Washington D.C., New York, Miami, and Los Angeles.

When to choose on-site

Where physical presence changes the outcome

Courtrooms and legal proceedings

A courtroom interpreter ensures that a defendant who does not speak English fully understands the proceedings, preserving their rights and fair trial access.

Medical appointments and procedures

In-person interpreting for consultations, procedures, and consent conversations where a clinician needs the interpreter in the room.

Conferences and large events

Simultaneous interpreting with equipment, or consecutive interpreting for smaller sessions and side meetings.

ASL and accessibility compliance

Specialized support for American Sign Language interpretation and accessibility obligations, including Certified Deaf Interpreters.

Emergency and urgent situations

Urgent requests supported alongside scheduled appointments when something cannot wait.

Government and community services

Benefits offices, social services, housing programs, and public meetings that serve multilingual communities.

Ensuring quality and compliance

Vetted for the room they are walking into

Every on-site interpreter is background-checked and certified, and assignments are matched to the setting: courtroom, healthcare, or corporate. Our interpreters are compliant with courtroom, healthcare, and corporate regulations, and are available for both scheduled appointments and urgent requests.

When assigning a sign language interpreter to a Deaf student or patient, there are a variety of variables to consider such as cultural and linguistic competency and subject matter expertise. You always want to make sure the assigned ASL interpreter is the best possible fit. Our ASL work is guided by our internal Deaf Leadership team, and we consult with the Deaf community to make sure our practices and approach are in line with their needs.

Modes of on-site interpreting

Consecutive or simultaneous, matched to the setting

Both consecutive and simultaneous interpretation can be provided on site as well as remotely. The right mode depends on the size of the room and the pace of the conversation.

Consecutive

The interpreter listens, then conveys what was said. There is time and space to think, pause, and clarify, which suits interviews, appointments, and negotiations.

Simultaneous

The interpreter conveys meaning in real time while the speaker continues, which suits conferences and large events and usually needs equipment.

Sign language

ASL and BSL interpreters, including Certified Deaf Interpreters paired with hearing interpreters for greater trust and clarity.
