Future-Ready: Supporting Multilingual Voices

As Ad Astra celebrates another year of powering connection, we’re dedicating our anniversary to something close to our hearts: Education.
In Episode 28 of Connected Conversations, host Elena Petrova is joined by Joe Callahan, Executive Director of the Education Foundation of Anne Arundel County Public Schools, to discuss a new initiative designed to uplift the next generation of multilingual changemakers.
A Scholarship That Speaks Your Language
Beginning in Spring 2026, the Foundation will award up to two $1,000 scholarships to graduating high school seniors who come from multilingual households—where a language other than English (spoken or signed) was used at home.
Whether these students are pursuing a two- or four-year degree, attending a trade school, or joining the military, this scholarship is about breaking barriers
Why It Matters
For students who navigate language and culture in multiple worlds—at home, at school, and in the community—the journey to higher education is often filled with both challenges and strength. This scholarship recognises that bilingualism and cultural identity are assets, not obstacles.
Joe Callahan shares how this initiative came to life, the role of the Office of Interpretation and Translation at AACPS, and why investing in students from diverse linguistic backgrounds helps entire communities thrive.
Education as Recognition
This isn’t just about funding - it’s about recognition, access, and empowerment.
Joe and Elena discuss:
-
What inspired the Foundation to create this scholarship.
-
The kinds of systemic gaps multilingual students face.
-
How language access and interpretation services intersect with student success.
-
The ripple effects of supporting just one student through a post-secondary milestone.

We invite our community to join us in celebrating Ad Astra’s anniversary by taking action.

Conclusion: The Future is Multilingual
Episode 28 reminds us that education is the most powerful investment we can make in our communities. By supporting multilingual students, we’re not just helping individuals—we’re shaping a more inclusive, connected, and brilliant future.
Let’s honour the power of language, identity, and opportunity—one scholarship at a time.
